Baby Photos on an Acrylic Block

By Giftenova Team – Published October 22, 2026

Illustrated source selection for an adult’s keepsake. This is not a photograph, printed block or posing guide.

A baby photo on an acrylic block starts with one decision: what the picture must keep. That might be the baby’s expression, a small detail such as a hand resting on a blanket, or a moment the baby shares with a parent or another adult. Once you know which, you can compare square and portrait crops, check those details at the block size you want, and save the exact copy you will upload. The steps below assume the photograph already exists and that an adult will display the finished block.

Choose the part of the moment you want to keep

Choose whether the keepsake should show the baby’s expression, a small remembered detail, or a moment shared with a parent or another adult. Each is a valid choice, and each asks something different of the crop.

  • The baby’s expression: a face-focused portrait, where the baby fills most of the frame and the surroundings matter less.
  • A small detail: a hand, a foot, or a blanket pattern that already appears clearly in one of your photographs. A detail photo can leave faces out on purpose.
  • A shared moment: the baby together with a parent or another adult, where the relationship between them is the point of the picture.

These choices do not convert into one another. A close crop of the baby alone is a portrait of the baby, not a portrait of both people, even when the baby’s face is sharp and clear. If the adult’s face or hand is part of the memory, the crop has to keep it.

The right photograph does not need a smile, open eyes or a particular milestone. It needs to show the part of the moment the keepsake is for. A baby in the photograph also does not make the block a baby’s item: it is a keepsake for an adult’s desk or shelf.

If you are still deciding who will keep the piece or which format to use, start with choosing a new baby gift.

Compare the portrait and square crops

Compare both shapes against the details you want to keep, because a square can retain both people in one photo and cut through them in another. Compare the available acrylic photo block sizes, then check what each shape keeps from your chosen photograph. The 2 x 2, 4 x 4 and 6 x 6 inch blocks have square faces. The 4 x 6 inch block is a rectangle, and its orientation is your choice: portrait (2:3) if it stands tall, or landscape (3:2) if it stands wide.

The examples below are schematic illustrations of one fictional scene, drawn for this guide. They compare one portrait crop with two square crops of a vertical source. They are not photographs, product previews or print tests, and they show composition only.

Three crops of one fictional adult-and-baby illustration: a 2:3 portrait keeps both faces and a hand; a loose square trims the adult’s hair and the hand touches the lower edge; a close square excludes the adult’s face and hand.
Schematic illustrations, not photographs, product previews or print tests. This source was drawn at 2:3, so its portrait view is uncropped; other source shapes can lose edges in portrait too. In the loose square, the adult’s hand touches the lower edge.

Because the illustrated source was drawn at 2:3, the same shape as the portrait block, the full portrait keeps both faces, the adult’s full hair outline and the hand without cropping. The loose square still keeps both faces, but it trims the top of the adult’s hair and the hand touches the lower edge. The close square keeps the baby’s face and excludes the adult’s face and hand; only a strip of the adult’s clothing remains at the left.

What each illustrative crop keeps
View Retained Edge or missing detail
Full portrait Both faces and the hand More clothing and surrounding space
Loose square Both faces and the hand Hair top is cropped; hand touches the lower edge
Close square The baby’s face Adult’s face and hand outside; a strip of adult clothing remains

Judge each edge by the memory you chose. Losing room, furniture or background is often fine. Losing a person you meant to include, or a hand or blanket that carries the meaning of the photo, changes what the keepsake shows. In the loose square, both faces fit, yet the hand sits right on the boundary, so a face check alone would miss it.

If the details you need do not fit a shape, loosen or move the crop where the photograph has room, or choose another photograph of the same moment. Cropping cannot bring back a person or detail that falls outside the original picture. If a layout you need is not something the product page offers, contact us before ordering.

In this example, the portrait crop kept the vertical shared scene because the source was drawn at 2:3. An original with a different shape can lose an edge in portrait too, so check every edge for each shape you consider. If your shared photo is wide, with the adult and baby side by side, the landscape (3:2) orientation of the 4 x 6 inch block can keep both of them without forcing a square or portrait crop. No shape is limited to one subject, and none keeps every original uncropped.

Check faces and small details at the chosen size

Look at the crop at the block size you want, then check the saved copy’s pixel dimensions and whether the details you want are clear.

  • Look at the baby’s face, the adult’s face if you meant to keep it, and any hand, clothing or blanket detail that matters.
  • In a wide shared scene, the baby can appear small even when the adult is easy to see. There is no fixed number of faces or minimum face size that settles this; look at the actual crop.
  • Set the image on screen to the block’s real width with a ruler, or print a plain-paper copy at the planned dimensions. Zoom at 100% in a photo app is not the same as physical size. This shows scale and layout only, not how colors or sharpness will look in acrylic.

A closer crop, or a larger block, makes the faces appear larger. A closer crop also removes surrounding context, so recheck what it lost. Neither choice adds detail the camera did not capture. Check that the faces and details you want are in focus, not only that the file is large enough.

If part of the picture is very dark or very bright, look at whether the details you care about are actually visible in the saved file. Do not count on later adjustment to bring them out.

Then check the numbers. Open the saved, cropped copy, read its width and height in pixels, and multiply them for the total. Compare that total with the product’s recommendations: 2 MP (2 million pixels) for the 2 x 2 and 4 x 4 inch blocks, and 4 MP for the 4 x 6 and 6 x 6 inch blocks. For example, a saved crop of 1,800 x 1,800 pixels has 3,240,000 pixels, about 3.2 MP: above the recommendation for the 2 x 2 and 4 x 4 inch blocks, below it for the 4 x 6 and 6 x 6 inch blocks.

These are recommendations, not hard minimums, and meeting one does not guarantee a sharp result. Upscaling a file can increase its pixel count without adding detail the camera captured.

A tight crop keeps only part of the original’s pixels. In the illustration, the close square spans 300 of the source’s 800 drawing units across, 37.5% of its width, and covers 90,000 of 960,000 square units, about 9.4% of its area. Crop a photograph the same way without resizing it and the saved copy keeps roughly that share of the original’s pixels. That is why the check belongs on the saved crop rather than on the uncropped original.

Keep one moment clear, or choose a first-year collage

Use one photograph when one moment carries the keepsake; if several moments matter, arrange them as a deliberate collage.

A single detail or expression and a set of moments from the first year answer different wishes. There is no required number of photos and no need to cover every month. If you combine pictures, every photo shares the same block face, so each face and detail becomes smaller. Close-ups and wide shared scenes in one layout also compete for space. Do not assume several moments will read clearly on the smallest block; check the collage at the planned size the same way you would check a single crop.

The product form has a single Photo field, so a collage needs to be arranged into one finished image before you save and upload it.

Save the image you intend to display

Save a separate copy with the crop and any wording already clear, reopen that exact file, and select the matching block size before uploading. Keep the uncropped original as well.

When you reopen the saved copy, check:

  • the faces and details you chose to keep;
  • any wording or dates that are already part of the picture;
  • the shape and orientation matching the size you will select: square, or portrait or landscape for the 4 x 6 inch block;
  • the saved copy’s own pixel dimensions against the recommendations, not the original’s total.

Save the file as a JPG or PNG. The product form has a Photo field and a copyright notice; it has no separate name or date field. If wording such as a name or date is already part of your prepared image, it prints as part of that image, so check that it is still readable at the block size. The notice asks you to confirm that you own or have permission to use the image. Read it before uploading; this guide does not settle questions of permission.

The photo is UV-printed on the rear surface of the block and viewed through the clear acrylic. It remains a flat photograph; the acrylic does not add dimension or detail to the image.

There is no live visual mockup. We review each uploaded photo before production and contact you if something needs adjusting, so your own check of the saved file is what confirms the crop you intend. Select the matching size on the Acrylic Photo Block product page and upload the image you have checked.
