Handwriting and Recipe Photos on an Acrylic Block: Size and Layout

AI-generated example based on the catalog block. A photographed recipe is shown as artwork printed on the rear and viewed through the acrylic; it is not a paper insert.
A handwritten recipe, a note or a signature goes on an Acrylic Photo Block as part of your photo. The block has no separate text field, so the writing is whatever appears in the image you upload, printed on the rear surface and viewed through the clear acrylic. That makes the real decision a question of space: a whole card has to fit within the chosen 2 to 6 inch face and may need to shrink, while a narrower excerpt can be shown larger. The examples below work through both with one fictional card and the four block sizes.
Choose what the handwriting needs to preserve
Decide first what the gift has to keep: the whole card so it still reads as a recipe, one meaningful line, or a sign-off in a hand someone will recognize.
Keep the marks that make it personal, such as a flourish, a date, a crossed-out word, a note in the margin or the tone of the paper. Avoid retyping or tracing over the writing to make it look tidier, because the hand itself is the point of the gift.
A full recipe and a keepsake excerpt do different jobs. If someone should be able to cook from it, the whole card has to stay readable. If one line is enough, treat it as an excerpt and keep each quantity with its unit and ingredient, such as "1/2 cup raisins", rather than splitting them apart.
If you still need to photograph or scan the card, capture it flat, square on and in even light, and keep the original file. If you want the writing to become an activity, the guide to recipe and handwriting puzzles explains the separate piece-and-join decisions. Fit the whole card to the actual block face
Fitting the whole card means scaling it down until all of it sits inside the block face. On a square or portrait face, a wide card is limited by its width, so a wider face makes the letters bigger and a taller one does not.
The acrylic photo block sizes guide covers the full product choices; here the question is how much room those faces leave for the writing. The examples use a fictional card 6 inches wide and 4 inches high, fitted with no margin. It is an example that keeps the arithmetic easy, not a standard recipe-card size.
| Block face | Whole card fits at | Letter size vs. the card |
|---|---|---|
| 2 x 2 in (5 x 5 cm) | 2 x 1⅓ in | One third |
| 4 x 4 in (10 x 10 cm) | 4 x 2⅔ in | Two thirds |
| 4 x 6 in (10 x 15 cm) portrait | 4 x 2⅔ in | Two thirds |
| 6 x 6 in (15 x 15 cm) | 6 x 4 in | Same as the card |
The 4 x 6 inch portrait block gives this card more height but no more width, so its writing is no larger than on the 4 x 4 inch block. The extra height becomes background above and below the card. Any margin you add around the card takes a little more room from the writing.
These examples keep the 4 x 6 inch block in its listed portrait orientation. Turning the card 90 degrees inside a portrait layout would let it fill the face, but the writing would then run sideways.
If your image has a different shape from the block face, it has to be cropped or fitted to that face. Filling a square with a wide card cuts off its sides, which can remove the starts or ends of lines.
To keep the whole card, prepare one image in the block's shape yourself: a square for the 2 x 2, 4 x 4 and 6 x 6 inch blocks, or a 2:3 portrait for the 4 x 6 inch block, with the card placed inside and the background around it included. A photo of the wide card on its own does not show how you want it fitted. The background you add becomes part of the printed image, so a tone close to the paper can keep the attention on the writing.
Use a narrower excerpt when you want larger handwriting
Cropping above and below a full-width line does not make its letters any bigger on these faces. Because the card is limited by its width, a strip that is still 6 inches wide fits at exactly the same scale as the whole card. To enlarge the writing, the excerpt itself has to be narrower.
On the fictional card, the sign-off "Enjoy, Riley." sits inside an area 3.4 inches wide and 0.76 inches high. On a 4 x 4 inch face, the whole card prints at two thirds of its original size, while this narrower excerpt fills the face width at about 1.18 times its original size. Its letters come out about 1.76 times larger than in the whole-card layout, and the same comparison holds on each of the four block sizes.
Choose an excerpt that is naturally short: a title, one complete ingredient line or a sign-off. Do not cut a word to make it fit, and keep any quantity with its unit and ingredient. An excerpt is a keepsake of the card, not the complete recipe.
Check every edge of the crop. Tall strokes, tails below the line, dots, commas and the last flourish of a signature are easy to clip, and a clipped letter can change what a word says. Crop from the original image rather than redrawing anything.
A larger excerpt is not automatically readable in print, so check it at its planned size as described below. If you also want a photo beside the writing, the writing gets less room again, and that becomes a collage layout question.
Read the actual letters at the planned physical size
Check the chosen words at the size they will print, without zooming in. Use a ruler to set the image to its real dimensions on screen, or print it on plain paper at that size and measure it, because 100% browser zoom does not show real size.
Then read the smallest meaningful text. Look for letters that stay distinct only through a small gap or a thin join, such as a and o or n and h, and for dots, decimal points and fraction slashes. In our fictional card, the handwritten 1 in "1 cup oats" is a single stroke that could pass for a capital I; at a small size, a mark like that is worth reading twice.
If you find yourself guessing, try a larger block, a shorter complete excerpt or a clearer copy of the card. Adding pixels or sharpening cannot bring back strokes that are missing from the source. Keep any edits gentle and save the untouched original, and leave the card itself as it is rather than tracing over it.
A paper or screen check shows size and layout only. It cannot show the color, gloss or depth of the acrylic, or how sharp the finished print will be.
Prepare the image the way you want to read it from the front. We treat a block that doesn't match the photo you uploaded as a fault to put right, so check that the words read correctly in the exact file you send.
Submit the photo with its layout already clear
Select the block size that matches your layout and upload the finished image as your photo. Export the whole layout, background included, as one JPG or PNG in the block's shape: square for the 2 x 2, 4 x 4 or 6 x 6 inch sizes, 2:3 portrait for the 4 x 6 inch size. Several sizes share the square shape, so check that the size you select is the one you planned for.
Reopen the exact file before uploading and read it through once more. Because the block has no text field, the handwriting is carried entirely by your photo, so prepare it the way you want it to look.
We review every uploaded photo before production and message you if it needs cropping, resizing or adjustment to print well. There is no live preview, so your own size check is how you settle the layout before ordering. The upload form also asks you to confirm its copyright notice; read it before sending writing that belongs to someone else.
