What to Write on a Photo Crystal: Names, Dates and Short Messages
By Giftenova Team – Published October 10, 2026
A photo crystal can carry an optional engraved message of up to 30 characters, enough for a name, a date or one short thought. Spaces and punctuation count toward the 30, so "Emma & Noah, June 14, 2025" uses 26 of them. The order Notes field is a separate box for instructions to us; it is not extra engraving space.
What can you put in the crystal text field?
The Custom Text field takes a short typed message, up to 30 characters, which is engraved alongside the 3D image. It is optional, and the photo works on its own if you leave it empty.
Three points are worth knowing before you write:
- Every character counts. Letters, numbers, spaces, commas, periods and the ampersand all use part of the 30.
- Use Custom Text for your message. Notes is for order instructions; do not use it to bypass the 30-character allowance.
- Check it before you submit. There is no preview step for crystals, so spelling, capitals and spacing need to be right in the field itself.
For general background, see how text fields differ across products; use the crystal product page for its current allowance.
Choose a name, a date or one short thought
Start with what the photograph does not already say. A face in a crystal is recognizable to the family, but the people who see it on a shelf in twenty years may not know who it is or when it was taken.
| Text type | What it adds | Fits when |
|---|---|---|
| Names | Who is in the photo | A family or group photo, or a portrait of someone who has passed |
| A date or year | When the moment happened | A wedding, a birth, a first home or any day the photo marks |
| A short dedication | What the relationship means | A gift from one person to another, where the feeling matters more than the facts |
No message is required. A strong photo can carry a crystal by itself, and a crowded line can pull attention away from the image. If you still need to choose the object itself, start with the 3D crystal guide.
Short message examples with character counts
These original examples are counted exactly as written, including spaces and punctuation.
| Example | Characters | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Mom | 3 | Name |
| Grandpa Joe | 11 | Name |
| Emma & Noah | 11 | Names |
| Est. 2015 | 9 | Year |
| June 14, 2025 | 13 | Date |
| Max, 2012 to 2026 | 17 | Pet name and years |
| Welcome, baby Lily | 18 | Dedication with a name |
| Our first home, 2024 | 20 | Dedication with a year |
| Love you always, Mom | 20 | Dedication with a name |
| Forever in our hearts | 21 | Dedication |
| Emma & Noah, June 14, 2025 | 26 | Names and date |
| Mom & Dad, 40 years together | 28 | Names and dedication |
If you start from a fixed phrase and add a name, count the fixed part first, including the space at its end, then see how much room is left:
- "Happy 60th, " uses 12 characters, which leaves 18 for a name.
- "In loving memory of " uses 20, which leaves 10.
- "Forever, " uses 9, which leaves 21.
After you fill in the name, count the whole line again rather than relying on the budget.
How to shorten a message without losing its meaning
When a first draft runs long, decide which part matters to you and keep that. Here is one draft and two ways to bring it under 30:
| Version | Text | Characters |
|---|---|---|
| First draft | Forever in our hearts, Grandma Rose, 1941 to 2025 | 49 (too long) |
| Keep the name and years | Grandma Rose 1941 to 2025 | 25 |
| Keep the dedication | Forever in our hearts | 21 |
Pick the version that adds what the photo cannot show. If the family will always know who Grandma Rose is, the dedication may matter more; if the crystal is meant to be passed down, the name and years may. Common ways to save space are using the year instead of a full date, dropping a title, or choosing one name the recipient uses every day.
Check the final wording before you submit
Read the line once more against this list before you place the order:
- Count again after any change to a name or date.
- Spelling and capitals of every name, checked with someone who knows how the person writes it.
- Date format. A numeric date such as 03/04/2025 can mean March 4 or April 3; writing the month as a word avoids that ambiguity.
- Special characters. If a particular accented letter or symbol is essential, confirm it with us before ordering.
To preserve the actual strokes of a note, use handwriting and signatures in crystal instead of typing a dedication; handwriting is uploaded as an image and engraved in 2D, not entered in this field. Check the current Custom Text field on the 3D Crystal Photo Block before placing the order.
