How to Design a Photo Collage for an Acrylic Block
By Giftenova Team – Published October 12, 2026
Choose your block size before you arrange a single photo. The 2 x 2, 4 x 4 and 6 x 6 inch blocks need a square collage, and the 4 x 6 inch block needs a portrait collage in a 2:3 ratio. Then give the important photos enough room, crop each one, check every tile at the size it will print, and upload the collage as one finished image with the matching size selected.
Match your collage canvas to the block
Your collage canvas should have the same shape as the block face you plan to order. The Acrylic Photo Block comes in four sizes:
| Block size | Face shape | Collage ratio |
|---|---|---|
| 2 x 2 in (5 x 5 cm) | Square | 1:1 |
| 4 x 4 in (10 x 10 cm) | Square | 1:1 |
| 4 x 6 in (10 x 15 cm) | Portrait | 2:3 |
| 6 x 6 in (15 x 15 cm) | Square | 1:1 |
The 4 x 6 inch block is listed as a portrait size, so set up a 2:3 canvas that is taller than it is wide. There is no separate 6 x 4 inch landscape Size option, even if your editor offers that orientation.
Pick the size first because the shape decides everything that follows. If a finished collage has a different ratio from the block face, it has to be cropped or fitted to that face, and the outer tiles are the first to lose content when cropping is involved. Designing at the right ratio from the start avoids the problem. For the size and product basics, use our acrylic photo block guide.
Choose a layout that gives the important photos room
Give the most space to the photos whose faces or details matter most, then judge the layout at the size you are ordering, not at the size it appears on your screen.
Three common layouts treat the same photos very differently:
- Two photos side by side split the face in half. On a 4 x 4 inch block, each tile is 2 inches wide and 4 inches tall before any spacing, a shape that suits upright portraits better than wide group shots.
- A four-photo grid gives every photo the same weight. With no spacing, a 4 x 4 inch face divides into four 2 x 2 inch tiles. The same grid on a 2 x 2 inch block leaves four 1 x 1 inch tiles.
- A lead photo with supporting tiles lets one image carry the collage while smaller tiles add context. This fits when one photo matters more than the rest and the supporting photos still read at a smaller size.
Those tile sizes are simple geometry for illustration, not production measurements. Spacing and margins make every tile smaller.
Count faces, not files. A group photo placed in one small tile shrinks every face in it, so a collage that includes a family group can be harder to read than one with four single portraits. Look at each face you want to keep.
No fixed number of photos always fits. It depends on how much detail each photo needs and how large its tile ends up. Use our photo collage maker to try a square or portrait layout before you export the image. It accepts 2 to 9 photos, which is a limit of the tool, not a recommendation for a block.
Crop each photo before checking the complete collage
Adjust each tile on its own so the details you care about survive that tile's shape and position.
- Pan and zoom each photo inside its own tile. A square block face does not make every tile square: a side-by-side tile is tall, and a lead tile is often wide.
- Compare each crop with the original photo. Eyes, ears, hands, a pet's face or the detail that makes the moment should still be inside the tile.
- When you switch from a square 1:1 collage to a 2:3 portrait collage, rebuild the layout and recheck every crop. Trimming a finished square collage down to portrait cuts through the outer tiles.
Cropping also discards pixels. A small source photo cropped tightly into a tile keeps little real detail, and exporting the collage at a larger pixel size does not bring that detail back. For the relationship between retained pixels and print size, see photo resolution for printing.
Keep spacing useful and check the collage at its final size
Spacing separates photos, but it also takes room from them, so use only as much as the layout needs and then check the collage at the size it will print.
Spacing between photos and a margin around the outer edge both come out of the same small face. As an illustrative calculation, a four-photo grid on a 4 x 4 inch face gives 2 x 2 inch tiles with no spacing. Add 0.2 inches of spacing between the tiles and each tile shrinks to 1.9 inches. Add a 0.2 inch outer margin as well and each tile is 1.7 inches. These are example numbers, not a required margin.
Your photo is UV-printed on the rear surface of the block and viewed through the clear acrylic as one flat image. The spacing and background color are part of the image you upload, not gaps cut into the acrylic.
Then look at the collage at its real size. Setting your browser or editor to 100% zoom does not show an image at its printed size, so use one of these checks:
- Hold a ruler against your screen and zoom until the collage measures the width of your block, for example 4 inches for a 4 x 4 inch block.
- Print the collage on plain paper at the block's dimensions, then measure the print to confirm it came out at that size.
At that size, go through every tile:
- Each face you want to keep is still recognizable.
- No photo looks much brighter or darker than its neighbors.
- The same person or moment does not appear twice by accident.
- No head, hand or important detail is cut off at a tile edge.
- No tile is empty or still holds a placeholder.
- Any text that is already part of a photo or graphic stays readable and uncropped.
Text inside your images prints as part of the picture. The block has no separate text field, and the collage maker does not add text for you.
A generic square or 2:3 ratio in the collage maker, chosen without a product-size preset, gives no warning when a tile is too soft for its printed size. Your own check at real size is how you catch that.
Export one finished image and check the upload
Save the whole layout as one image, reopen that file, then select the matching size on the product page and upload it.
- Export the complete collage. The collage maker downloads a JPEG. Another editor can export a JPG or PNG, the file types the product page accepts.
- Reopen the exact file you saved. Check that every tile made it into the export, the crops match what you designed, and compression has not softened any faces. Look at full detail, then again at the real printed size.
- Select the matching size. Choose 2 x 2, 4 x 4 or 6 x 6 inches for a square collage, or 4 x 6 inches for a 2:3 portrait collage. All three square sizes share the same shape, so confirm the exact size you designed for, not just the ratio.
- Upload the one finished image. Upload the collage itself rather than the separate photos, so the layout you checked is the layout we receive.
The product page recommends at least 2 MP for the 2 x 2 and 4 x 4 inch sizes and 4 MP or more for the 4 x 6 and 6 x 6 inch sizes. That guidance applies to the whole collage file. A file that meets it can still contain one tile cropped from a small photo, so judge each tile's detail as well.
There is no live product mockup. Our team reviews uploaded photos before production and contacts you if something needs adjusting, but that review is not a proof for you to approve, so finish your own checks before you order.
When the saved image passes your checks, choose the matching size on the Acrylic Photo Block product page and upload the finished collage.
