Are Custom Photo Puzzles Safe for Young Children?
By Giftenova Team – Last updated May 8, 2026
Yes for ages 7 and up, on either the Custom Jigsaw Puzzle For Kids or the 100 XL piece count from the main custom puzzle product. The standard 99, 500, and 1000-piece sizes are recommended for ages 13+ due to small-piece choking risk. Giftenova does not currently sell a custom photo puzzle positioned for children under age 7.
Age Recommendations by Piece Count
Each Giftenova custom puzzle product has an age recommendation based on the listed product guidance and piece size. The table:
- Custom Jigsaw Puzzle For Kids. Ages 7-12. A 100 large piece puzzle on the same large-piece scale as the 100 XL piece count, listed under a separate product page. See the Custom Jigsaw Puzzle For Kids product.
- 100 XL pieces with box. Ages 7+. Extra-large playing-card-sized tiles, positioned for ages 7 and up. The right pick for kids ages 7 to 12, for cooperative parent-and-child puzzling, and for senior recipients with reduced grip strength.
- 500 pieces with box. Ages 13+. Standard piece size, similar to most off-the-shelf adult puzzles.
- 1000 pieces with box. Ages 13+. Standard piece size, longer assembly time, finished size large enough to wall-frame.
- 99 pieces with tube. Ages 13+. Small piece size in a card-friendly format; not intended for young children even though the total piece count is low.
Why the 100 XL is the Boundary
The 100 XL count uses pieces roughly the size of a playing card, large enough that small-parts choking concerns drop sharply for kids ages 7 and up. The standard 99, 500, and 1000-piece counts use pieces small enough to be a choking hazard for young children, which is why they are recommended for ages 13+ regardless of the total piece count.
For households with kids ages 7-12 where an adult will supervise the puzzle, the 100 XL piece count or the Custom Jigsaw Puzzle For Kids is a family-friendly pick - both are the same large-piece scale. Giftenova does not currently sell a custom photo puzzle positioned for children under 7; for that age range, a board book, chunky wooden puzzle, or foam puzzle from a toy retailer is the right gift format.
