Do Photo Puzzles Fit in Standard Picture Frames?
Last updated May 8, 2026
Sometimes. The 1000-piece (19 by 27 in) fits a 20 by 28 or 24 by 36 frame. The 500 and 100 XL (13.5 by 19 in) fit a 16 by 20 frame. The 99-piece is too small for off-the-shelf frames. Custom frames at the exact puzzle dimensions also work.
Finished Puzzle Dimensions by Piece Count
Frame fit depends on the finished puzzle's exact dimensions. For Giftenova custom photo puzzles:
- 99 pieces: 3.5 by 5.1 inches (8.9 by 13 cm). Card-size; designed to ship in a mailer tube, not for framing.
- 100 XL pieces: 13.5 by 19 inches (34.3 by 48.3 cm). Same dimensions as the 500-piece, with larger tiles.
- 500 pieces: 13.5 by 19 inches (34.3 by 48.3 cm). The mid-size finished puzzle.
- 1000 pieces: 19 by 27 inches (48.3 by 68.6 cm). The statement size, large enough to anchor a wall.
Standard Frame Sizes That Fit
The frame must be at least as large as the puzzle, plus enough margin for any mat border you want around the image. Most retail frame stores carry:
- For the 1000-piece puzzle (19 by 27): a 20 by 28 frame leaves a thin half-inch margin on every side; a 24 by 36 frame leaves room for a wider mat border. Skip 18-by-anything frames, since 18 is narrower than the puzzle.
- For the 500 or 100 XL puzzle (13.5 by 19): a 16 by 20 frame leaves a small mat border; a 14 by 18 frame is just under the puzzle width and will not fit. A custom 13.5 by 19 frame at the exact puzzle dimensions is the cleanest no-mat option.
- For the 99-piece puzzle: skip the frame. The 99-piece pocket puzzle is small enough to display loose in a shadow box if you want to preserve it, but most owners disassemble it back into the tube after the solve.
When You Need a Custom Frame
If you want a tight, no-mat-border fit on your finished puzzle, a custom frame at the exact dimensions is the cleanest path. Most local custom-framing services produce a 13.5 by 19 or 19 by 27 inch frame in a few business days. To prepare the puzzle for framing, glue the assembled puzzle with puzzle-saver glue (a thin liquid that locks the pieces together permanently), let it dry on a flat surface, and mount it on a foam-core or rigid board cut to the same dimensions before placing it in the frame.
