Photo Block Puzzle or Acrylic Photo Block: Build It or Display It?

By Giftenova Team – Published October 10, 2026

A Photo Block Puzzle is a small printed-brick panel you assemble and display on two supports. An Acrylic Photo Block is a finished solid object with the photo printed on its rear surface, and there is nothing to assemble. The two share the words "photo block", but the choice comes down to whether the recipient builds the picture or simply sets it out.

What does each photo block contain?

The Photo Block Puzzle is a kit. It contains the printed bricks for your chosen shape, a baseplate, a printed assembly guide and two unprinted support pieces for display. Kits range from 46 to 144 pieces and are intended for ages 13 and up.

The Acrylic Photo Block is a single piece of clear acrylic, 0.8 in (2 cm) thick. Your photo is UV-printed on the rear surface and seen through the clear acrylic. The block needs no separate stand: it stands upright on a flat surface, with no kit, baseplate or assembly step.

How will the same photograph look?

Both products show a flat printed photograph, so neither turns the picture into a 3D image. The difference is what lies across the picture. On the brick panel, the seams between bricks stay visible, including where they cross a face. On the acrylic block, the photo is seen as one continuous print through the clear front, with no brick joints.

Two catalog photos of the same couple picture side by side. Left, labelled Acrylic Photo Block 4 x 4 in: a clear square block standing on a wooden surface, showing a square crop of the photo through the acrylic. Right, labelled Photo Block Puzzle heart outline: an upright heart-shaped brick panel with seams across the picture and the outline trimming the edges of the photo
Catalog photos of the same source picture on each product, not shown to scale. The acrylic block shows a square crop; the heart outline keeps the center and trims the edges.

The outline also decides how much of the photo you keep. A square acrylic face shows a square crop of the picture. The heart outline narrows toward its point and has a notch at the top, so details near the edges can fall outside it. Both rectangular brick panels are portrait, so check whether the portrait crop cuts off important details at the sides.

Product-page guideline titled Picture to Block. A square couple photo with a stepped heart outline that keeps both faces inside is marked with a green check. A wide group photo where the heart outline cuts through several people is marked with a red cross. The footer reads Square pictures recommended
Crop guideline from the Photo Block Puzzle product page. It is an outline example, not a photo of a finished panel.

Compare the actual size and display setup

The smallest brick panel and the 4 x 4 in acrylic block have similar face sizes, but they are not identical, and they stand up in different ways. The named examples below give the picture area as width x height.

Example picture sizes (width x height)
Product and option Inches Centimeters
Photo Block Puzzle, 46 pieces, square outline 4.4 x 4.5 11.1 x 11.5
Photo Block Puzzle, 48 pieces, heart 6.3 x 5.7 15.9 x 14.4
Photo Block Puzzle, 144 pieces, rectangle 7.5 x 9.5 19.0 x 24.2
Acrylic Photo Block, 4 x 4 in 4 x 4 10 x 10
Acrylic Photo Block, 4 x 6 in portrait 4 x 6 10 x 15

The brick sizes describe the picture panel only. Leave extra room for the two supports that hold it upright; the panel figures are not the full footprint. The 48-piece heart is wider than it is tall. The acrylic block is 0.8 in (2 cm) thick and stands on a flat surface without a separate stand.

Which experience will the recipient enjoy?

The brick kit adds a short build before the display. By our estimate, assembly typically takes 5 to 30 minutes, and the time varies from builder to builder. The acrylic block arrives finished.

  • Hypothetical: a recipient who enjoys a small hands-on task. Connecting the printed bricks and watching the picture come together is part of the gift. The Photo Block Puzzle is a printed-brick kit you assemble. Small brick panels like these are not necessarily a big project.
  • Hypothetical: a recipient who wants the photo on display right away. A finished piece suits a desk or shelf from the moment it is unwrapped. The Acrylic Photo Block is a finished solid display with a rear-printed photograph.

Check the photo and selected format

Match the photo to the outline you chose, then check the variant before ordering. Use the photo block puzzle guide to compare all five variants and their crop checks. Use the acrylic photo block guide to choose the block size and prepare its photograph.
