What Photo Size Do I Need for a 1000-Piece Puzzle?
Last updated May 8, 2026
For a 1000-piece custom photo puzzle (finished size 19 by 27 inches), aim for at least 4 megapixels of source resolution; 8 megapixels or higher is preferred for sharp results. In pixel terms, that means a photo at minimum 2400 pixels on the long side, ideally 3500 pixels or more.
The Numbers in Plain Pixel Terms
The 1000-piece puzzle is the largest format Giftenova produces, finishing at 19 by 27 inches. That print surface needs more original detail than smaller piece counts because the image is stretched across more area. The practical thresholds:
- 4 megapixels minimum (about 2400 pixels long side). Acceptable for the 1000-piece. Faces will be readable, but fine textures (hair strands, fabric weave, distant background detail) may render slightly soft.
- 8 megapixels comfortable (about 3500 pixels long side). The recommended target for the 1000-piece. Faces and detail print crisp; the puzzle reads as a real photographic print rather than a soft photo enlargement.
- 12 megapixels or higher (4000 pixels long side or more). Modern phone defaults. The image clears the bar with margin and prints sharply across every piece.
How to Check Your Photo's Pixel Dimensions
The simple way: open the photo on your computer and check its dimensions in the file properties (right-click the file, select Properties or Get Info). The first number times the second number divided by 1,000,000 is the megapixel count. Examples: 4032 by 3024 = 12.2 MP, 4000 by 3000 = 12 MP, 1920 by 1080 = 2.1 MP.
If the photo is on your phone, the camera-roll original is what you want, not a thumbnail or social-media-saved copy. iPhones default to 12 MP for the main camera; modern Samsung Galaxy phones to 12 to 50 MP depending on the model. Camera-roll originals from recent phones usually clear the 1000-piece bar; older phones or compressed copies often do not.
