Why does my photo get trimmed when I crop it to a print size?

Print sizes have fixed shapes (aspect ratios) that rarely match a photo's. A phone photo is usually 4:3, while a 4x6 print is 2:3 and an 8x10 is 4:5, so some of the image must be trimmed to fit. Will my cropped photo print sharp?

Why crop to the print size before printing?

When a photo's shape doesn't match the print's, someone has to decide what gets trimmed - and if you leave it to an automatic print process, that decision is a blind center crop. Heads get clipped, feet disappear, and off-center subjects end up half out of frame. Cropping to the exact print shape yourself, before you print, means you choose what stays.

Cropping also changes sharpness. Only the pixels inside the crop box end up on paper, so a tight crop from a small photo can drop below the resolution a size needs. The verdict under the crop box does that math live: pixels in the crop divided by inches of print. If a size comes up short, try a looser crop or a smaller print.
